  8. This document describes the procedures for using the 3Com NIC Driver 
  9. Update Kit to upgrade your driver and diagnostic program to the version 
  10. of the software that is included on the EtherCD (R) version 5.3 for the 
  11. 3C90x Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL PCI Bus Master NIC Family.

  13. The 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit makes it possible to update your network 
  14. software without having to use the control panel.  It can also be used 
  15. to update many systems on a network automatically by using NetWare login 
  16. scripts or software version management system.

  19. Requirements
  20. ============
  21. 1) The update program will run on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millenium,
  22.    Windows NT 3.51, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000
  23.  
  24. 2) At least one 3C90x Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL PCI Bus Master NIC
  25.    must be installed in the system.

  27. Procedures for Updating the Driver and Diagnostic Program
  28. =========================================================
  29. 1) Click Start.
  30.  
  31. 2) In the start menu, click Run...
  32.  
  33. 3) On the Run window, click Browse...
  34.  
  35. 4) Find and click on the program Update.exe that came with this readme file
  36.  
  37. 5) In the Browse window, click OK.
  38.  
  39. 6) In the Run window, click OK.
  40.  
  41. 7) On the 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit Windows, click Update Network Software.
  42.  
  43. 8) Click OK when the update program finishes updating the network software.
  44.  
  45. 9) Reboot your computer. This step is not necessary for Windows 2000, unless
  46. there are more NICs to be inserted into the system.

  49. Installing the 3Com NIC Diagnostic Program in addition to updating the NIC drivers
  50. ==================================================================================
  51. On top of updating the NIC driver the 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit can 
  52. be used to install the 3Com NIC Diagnostic program.  By using the command 
  53. line parameter /diag the diagnostic program will be installed while your 
  54. NIC driver is updated.  If you have already updated your driver and decide
  55. later to install the 3Com NIC Diagnostic program, you can run the update 
  56. program again, with the /diag parameter.

  60. Installing the 3Com NIC Diagnostic Program by itself (no driver updates)
  61. ========================================================================
  62. The 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit can be used to install just the 3Com NIC Diagnostic 
  63. program.  This can be achieved by using the command line parameter /diagonly.

  65.         Update.exe /diagonly
  66.  
  67. This will NOT update the NIC drivers installed on your machine
  68.  
  69. Removing the 3Com NIC Diagnostic Program
  70. ========================================================================
  71. The 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit can be used to remove the 3Com NIC Diagnostic 
  72. program.  This can be achieved by using the command line parameter /remove, as in 
  73.  
  74.         Update.exe /remove
  75.  
  76. Invoking the Update program without any command line parameters, will also remove
  77. the 3Com NIC Diagnostic program. In fact, this will also remove the diagnostic program
  78. if any, that had been installed by an older version of Etherdisk.

  80. The 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit in Unattended Mode
  81. =================================================
  82. The 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit has two command line parameters that allow
  83. it to be used for unattended upgrades or to be used in software management 
  84. applications to push the upgrade to the end-stations.  
  85.  
  86. The first option, /unattended, suppresses all dialog boxes so no user 
  87. interaction is needed to perform the upgrade.  
  88. The second, /preload, should only be used if the Driver Update Kit is 
  89. called during the installation of the Operating System, or OS, and delays 
  90. the installation of the 3Com Diagnostic Communication Protocol until the 
  91. OS has finished its installation. Since running the Driver Update Kit 
  92. during the OS install requires special software from Microsoft, like the 
  93. OPK, if you are unsure on whether to call the /preload parameter we suggest
  94. you attempt the OS install without this parameter first and only if this 
  95. does not work should you use the /preload parameter.
